What is a Sentence?
A sentence is a group of words that makes complete sense.
Whenever we speak or write, we use words.
We generally use these words in the group. and this group must make complete sense.
Based on the sense or meaning of the sentence, they are divided into four types.
- Declarative sentence.
- Interrogative sentence.
- Imperative sentence.
- Exclamatory sentence
Let’s look into each of them with examples.
- Declarative Sentences
A declarative sentence is used to tell information or fact or simply make a statement or assertion.
The statement could be positive or negative.
They end with a full stop or period.
Examples of Declarative Sentences include :
- Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall. It is information in positive form.
- They don’t have food to eat. It is information in negative form.
- Sunrises in the East. It is a fact.
- Interrogative Sentences
Interrogative Sentence asks a question.
They end with a question mark.
Examples of Interrogative Sentences include:
- Where do you live?
- Do you like this channel?
- How did you come to know about the course?
- Imperative Sentences
An imperative sentence gives a command or asks for a request.
Iy end with a ‘.’ or ‘!’ mark depending on how forcefully you say any sentence.
Generally, we use ‘full stop’ but if the sentence is said more forcefully, we use an exclamation mark as well.
Examples of Imperative Sentences include:
- Be quiet.
- Have mercy upon us.
- Put it down!
Notice, as we have said the sentence forcefully, the exclamation is used.
Do remember one point here, In imperative sentences, the subject is always ‘you, but it is implied not mentioned.
So, here assume that the word ‘you’ is mentioned.
Now, let’s look into the fourth type of sentence.
- Exclamatory sentences
An exclamatory sentence expresses strong emotions or feelings.
It ends with an ‘!’ mark.
Examples of Exclamatory Sentences include:
How cold the night is!
What a shame!
Oh, God! I can’t bear this anymore.
These are the four types of sentences.
- optative sentence
It is used to express a wish or a prayer. and generally starts with ‘may’ or ‘wish’
It ends with a ‘.’ or ‘!’ mark depending on how forcefully you say any sentence.
Generally, we use ‘full stop’ but if the sentence is said more forcefully, we use an exclamation mark as well.
Example :
- May God bless us all.
- May the almighty help in this tragedy!
- Notice, as we have said the sentence forcefully, the exclamation is used.
- Wish you a very successful married life.
